History
Woodford Methodist Community Church has served its community since 1959 and have had a preschool since 1963.
We are situated in the heart of the Woodford estate (Plympton near Plymouth), our location makes us unique and is key to the development of our mission.
With the lessening of local amenities / shops, and meeting places, local medical help, and assistance over the past two decade means that there are a lot of isolated and lonely people of all ages, which we feel requires a community hub within the Woodford estate.
The proposed development of even more houses (Coypool Estate – a minimum of 500 houses), has led to an increasing number of people who feel isolated and lonely, even prior to COVID 19 / lockdown. Moreover, many people in our local community are ‘asset rich and cash poor’ for whom social inclusion is difficult.
The general layout of the existing building causes significant challenges for safeguarding and health and safety; for example: low lit corridors, hide away crevasse, large heavy doors, under par toilets and heating system etc.
We as a church are thinking outside the box and radically re-evaluating our service to mission with the community which requires a new style church and an adaptable building, which we do not have at present. This project we feel will deepen our relationship with our community. We also feel that the name THE MEETING PLACE, a new Community Wellbeing Hub and being all inclusive will capture the essence of what we are trying to obtain.
